My early spring bulbs and flowers.
The little violets are a real joy to see across the yard. It’s like they were just sprinkled there. These last for about a month or more. They came from my mother’s garden. You can see the bicolor here in the picture. The only other violets I’ve seen are either white or purple. And yes, they are perennials. While they are only about 3-4″ tall, nothing else is covering them up. Last year there was a solid patch of them on the north side of the yard, but they are not there now. It could have been overspray from the aerial spraying or what I don’t know. There are plenty in other spots across the yard.

My little violets.
Before the violets are done, the daffodils, other bulbs, azaleas and lilacs begin.

What a show! While the garden is not completely covered in daffodils, there are a lot of flowers to enjoy and pick. The late white Thalia is the only one that I cannot bring in the house as it has too strong of a fragrance and will run you out of the house. It is a pristine white and just beautiful! Anyway, there are flowers along my front ditch, in the big garden and more daffodils in a row out by my vegetable garden. Anyone looking for flowering bulbs have many choices. Brecks, K van Bourgendien, Colorblends, Brent and Beckys Bulbs, and Tulip Town Bulb Company to name a few suppliers.
Bermuda Grass Problems
I’m having fits with Bermuda grass and fescue getting in the big garden. I did find a way to kick the Bermuda grass somewhat with a grass killer that will really yellow things after 3+ weeks. This is called Hi-Yield Grass Killer. It is a postemergent weedy grass killer that doesn’t harm your desirable plants. I used it in my own garden through bulbs, daylillies, iris, roses, creeping phlox and more and am very slowly killing that darn Bermuda grass. This is online, but I found mine at the local MFA store. Earlier I had tried a product called Over The Top that did kill my asparagus too. The chemical has to be applied more than once as the seeds are there awaiting their turn. Bewhere, these chamicals are not cheap.
Early Blooming Shrubs
I have a wonderful bush called a golden current that blooms early too. Its perfume lasts for nearly a month or so with fragrant clusters of little yellow blooms. There are no berries, as it needs a second pollinator to produce. The fragrance waifs through the yard and through your house if you can open a window. It was only a little sprig when I planted it about 6 years ago. Slowly it is spreading, and I’ll have to do some cropping of the runners. From what I’ve read, most current shrubs are located up further north from me here in the midwest.
The azaleas and lilacs bloom nicely at about this time too. You can find these in all the major big box stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot but to find unique colors you might want to look at places like White Flower Farm or garden centers.
Weather
There has been a lot of rain this year after very little last year. My flowers are outstanding this year. This covers most of the early spring.
I am new at this and it does not respond to the normal prompts in Word or any other programs that I have used. It is a wonder I have any hair or a voice left!
